Joelishia Banfield has been a Kids’ Dreams Scholar since her fall semester of 2014 at Florida Atlantic University. Joelishia is an active member in her community and her church, spending much of her time in volunteering. She has just recently been awarded her Associate in Arts degree after her first year at FAU. Joelishia plans to continue her education, pursuing her dual major in Psychology and Criminal Justice to become involved in the field of Forensic Science.

“As a senior in high school I was that one student that was always in the guidance office waiting for new scholarship applications to surface. I had already had my transcripts, recommendations, and even sample essays ready to be put together to get the applications done as soon as possible. When I first heard about Kids’ Dreams I was excited to do the scholarship because I knew I had met all of their requirements and my story would stand out from many. At the time that I was completing the scholarship I was 16 years old, had already met all of my graduation requirements, and had achieved over 900 community service hours. I knew that these three factors would count for something so I didn’t hesitate to apply. After time quickly passed by my confidence in getting the scholarship slowly dwindled because I hadn’t heard from anyone. One day in April of 2014 Mrs.Lebow contacted me and informed that I had been the top recipient of the 2014 Kids’ Dreams scholarship. It truly made my heart smile to know that a huge weight had been lifted from my family because of my hard work. Since receiving the scholarship I am able to go to school debt free, accumulating no loans. This scholarship was the extra push I needed to make it through school financially and mentally. It has been such a blessing to have the financial and academic support of Kids’ Dream. Everyone that I have encountered while networking with this scholarship has extended a helping hand and encouragement and I must say: as a college student that is much needed and appreciated. Every chance that I get I keep Kids’ Dreams updated on how I am doing and tell them how thankful I am. Though I have other scholarships and financial aid, no other scholarship has shown me the love and support that Kids’ Dreams has. It is by far the best scholarship and support team one could have. I am forever grateful that I am one of the students they chose to invest in! My life wouldn’t be the same if they hadn’t.”
