FIELD TRIPS
3D PRINTING & DESIGN EVENT
Students learned how 3D printers work through a printing simulator within the software of the 3D printer. The advantages and disadvantages of using 3D printers over other manufacturing methods was explained. Students also had a chance to enter a 3D modeling environment using TinkerCAD’s online software. Through this software, they gained an understanding of how 3D models can be created, as well as some best practices for creating models that are intended for 3D printers. They then created a custom key chain that was printed at the Cox Science Center.
PROJECT PASSPORT
Kids’ Dreams proudly funds the Project Passport Program at the South Florida Science Center. This program benefits Title I school children from grades 1 through 8. The Science Center allows a teacher to pick a subject of interest for their class, such as: Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Engineering, Technology or Math, and a representative from the Science Center then visits the children in their classroom. This visit is followed by a trip to the Science Center to learn more about the subject in a hands-on environment. The second part of the program includes mentoring with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The PBSO visits the classroom to give an anti-gang message including the positive reinforcement of staying in school and focusing on education. The ultimate goal of Project Passport is to get more young children interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
